Spring Babies

I honestly have no good excuse, besides the obvious, for taking months to update our website. SO much has changed since February, and though I've been anxious to share the boys and their progress, my fortitude was a little beat down under the cumulative weight of our everyday "tangles." I spend a lot of think-time wondering where we're headed, what we've gotten ourselves into, and then in turn, somewhat embarrassed to share those realities.

Fortunately, ruts are almost always temporary. I think the Stones were definitely onto something with "You Can't Always Get What You Want," because as I age, I'm suprised (or not, depending how you look at it) how many times, during particularly low points, an unexpected event offers the exact encouragement I need to propel through a tough time. In my experience, it's never an actual solution, just a bit of inspiration or perspective that breeds what anyone needs...hope. So, now that I'm back on my horse, I'll catch you up on everything boy luck.

The arrival of spring means birthday season in our house. The babies turned ONE (!!!) on March 8th, and it was an emotional, bittersweet first birthday...a true celebration mixed with some lingering feelings of post-traumatic stress. I think it's fairly typical of parents, mothers in particular, to pour over the details of our child's arrival with each passing year. For us, it's completely unsettling to recount the events leading up to the triplets' birth. It was, by FAR, the scariest day of my life and in all honesty, there was a lot of sadness surrounding their arrival. If you don't know their heart-wrenching birth story, I'd be happy to tell you another time, but the details of their post-birth journey can be found at http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/molltriplets. It was a bit of a bummer that the boys just weren't ready for a full-blown birthday bash, but we still wanted to mark the occasion. Traumatic or not, it was still a very significant day, afterall! In the end, we counted our blessings, breathed a collective sigh of relief, and focused on our gratitude to have made it this far, relatively unscathed.

We had a birthday brunch, complete with cake. Just because the babies couldn't eat cake didn't mean we shouldn't!

Here are the birthday boys, in order of their first appearance!

Happy Birthday Benjamin David! 9:32 am, 1 pound 11 ounces, 12 inches

Happy Birthday Isaac Jason!! 9:33 am, 1 pound 6 ounces, 11 inches
Fact: On March 8th 2011, Ikey's entire foot fit on the pad of my thumb.
Happy Birthday Charles Robert!!! 9:34 am, 1 pound 15 ounces, 13 inches
Our wild and crazy guys!
William went to the toy store downtown and chose a special gift for each of his brothers...and wrapped it "himself," of course.
A police car for Charlie...
A dump truck for Ikey...
And a cement mixer for Benny

The boys got new wheels for their big day, and our new "choo choo wagon" has become a huge hit in the neighborhood. Since turning one, THIS is the way we roll...

Six weeks after the boys special day, William celebrated his 3rd birthday in fireman style. Jason and I secretly love to plan birthday parties, so when William requested a firetruck theme, we went straight to work. Check back tomorrow to see our little fire chief's big bash!

Happy Valentine's Day!

As much as it breaks my heart, I'm fairly certain my window of opportunity for frilly Valentine parties is quite narrow here in boy-ville. Maybe they'll continue to humor me for years to come, but just in case, I have to enjoy this while I can!

William delivering the Valentines he made for his brothers. I saw these oversize felt envelopes in Pottery Barn Kids, but leave it to Pinterest to make you think you can do anything yourself. In hindsight, ordering would've been much less time-consuming, but at least they turned out! (They actually hang over the backs of chairs)

Ahmie reading "Happy Valentine's Day Little Critter"!
And a little Valentines fun with our pudgy bare cherubs!

Finally, the next series is rather repetitive, but because someone is always doing their own thing, I just have to post them all.

Left to right: Ike, Charlie, Ben. We can FINALLY all sit unassisted!!!! The best development of the past week.

Hope you had a great holiday!

Here we are!

I'm not sure if we're housebound due to winter in Wisconsin and the demands of infants, or if I've officially become a recluse. There's probably a fine line between the two and I honestly can't tell which side I'm standing on anymore.

A lot has happened since our last update. After months of trying to calculate the best time for a move, we took the plunge and relocated our brood in the beginning of December. It hasn't been the easiest transition (we knew it wouldn't be), but we're here and there's no going back.

Christmas 2011. Our four boys and a cousin on the way! YEP!! I'm going to be an auntie on or around June 18th!
Our Baraboo house is moving painfully slow. After combining the best features from several designs with the architect, we have an obvious favorite (see below). The price tag, however, is slowing us WAY down. We'd hoped to hire out this time, but it's clearly not going to happen. So, once we get things squared away with the bank, it will be work gloves and long hours for us.
The boys are doing well, overall. It's been a huge ordeal transfering their care, but I think we're finally getting all the pieces in place. Healthwise, Ben and Charlie have little to report, but Ike has some exciting news to share! At his last eye exam, the doctor discovered his ROP was finally gone! Whew. Thought we were never going to close the book on that one. No more tortuous eye exams. Thank God. His vision continues to improve, but he still has quite a bit of nystagmus and does not see at a distance. Based on his behavior, the doctor suspected he was severely nearsighted, but upon further review, it's not the case. In fact, he doesn't need glasses at all. So, no one knows exactly what this all means when it comes down to the functionality of his vision, but we're hopeful he'll continue to progress and develop...in Ikey time, like everything else. At their last well-baby exam, Ikey was 17 pounds on the dot. He's still too small for the regular growth chart (he's actually only in the 10th percentile for preemies), but slowly closing the gap. To finish up on Ike, he's extremely coordinated and agile. He doesn't sit, but can roll back and forth across the floor better than anyone. He occupies himself forever with toys and is the happiest little boy I've ever seen. He loves to look out the window and loves to jump. He's exactly who he's supposed to be...I'm sure of it.

Ben and Charlie are doing well. Charlie is a big boy these days, sitting up on his own, moving pretty well on his stomach, and eating solids. We discovered, quite accidentally, that he has two bottom teeth, too! He's a HEFTY 20 pounds, and in the 50th percentile on the regular growth chart. We've started solids with Charlie, and although it took him a good month to get the hang of it, he loves to eat now (no surprise). He doesn't care for rice cereal, but finds pumpkin delicious! Ben is tipping the scale at 18 pounds 5 ounces, and has the most delicate personality of the three. For some reason, Ben is really struggling to sit. He actually resists it. I don't know if it's because he likes to pull up to a stand, or if he finds the position uncomfortable, but I'm anxious to get him back in physical therapy. He's very expressive and wants your attention...all the time.

Our bedtime struggles continue. The boys nap fairly well, but have a lot of trouble going down at night. Bedtime takes HOURS, which is taxing on all of us. We're two nights into a new approach, so I'll let you know how it goes.

William made the move without missing a beat. He gets his easy-going, roll-with-the-punches, laid back personality from his daddy. He talks about Illinois, but is especially fond of Baraboo already. While we're finding our living situation to be rather close quarters, it doesn't seem like William finds anything bizarre about our current arrangement. We finished potty training a few weeks ago....YES! My diaper-wearing population has been reduced to three. He still wears a diaper to bed at night, but he's all about the "big boy undies" during the day. He FINALLY finds his brothers enjoyable and interacts with them more every day. I never thought we'd have a picture like the one below, where William actually let the boys touch him.

Look how identical we are! Charlie and Benny

See...all I had to do was mention my bad sleepers and I hear some naughty boys awake from their nap. I think we'll go for a walk on this 50 degree January day, but before I wrap this up, I have one more bit of news that I'm going to make public.

Your eyes aren't playing tricks on you.
Nearly 16 weeks in, I can't hide much longer. Believe me, no one was more shocked than us. Without elaborating on the details, I want to make it clear that the odds of this happening were about as good as conceiving identical triplets. I don't know how we keep beating extreme odds, but for whatever reason, that's how this year has played out. We've gone through the full range of emotions, but at the end of the day, we can only see this as "meant to be." So, baby #5, our grand finale, will arrive mid-July. And yes, I've had an ultrasound and there's only one. That's all for now. More to follow, but I think that's enough for today. Happy 2012...looks like it's going to be another wild one!

Baby's Gotta Eat!

The boys are still a couple months from starting solids, but fall veggies are ripe and ready, so it's the perfect time to stock the freezer. Pumpkins, squash, and apples all freeze exceptionally well, and with three growing boys, I have my work cut out for me!

I've been out to the pumpkin farm twice so far, but plan to make as many trips as my baby food operation can support. If you've never made baby food before, it's incredibly easy...not to mention cheap and LOCAL! William loved pumpkin (Let's be serious, I could eat it with a spoon too!), and since you get a lot of bang for your buck, it's a great place to start your baby food production.

Start by washing your pie pumpkins and chopping in half. You might think "bigger is better" and be tempted to get regular pumpkins, but in this case, go with the pie variety. They're small and dense, less watery, and the actual "meat" is a lot thicker.

Scoop out the insides and place scooped-side down in a shallow pan of water.

Next, bake in the oven at 350 degrees for about an hour. If pumpkin skin is soft when poked, it's done.

Next, remove pumpkins, scrape cooked pumpkin into food processor, and discard skins. Puree until smooth and you've got yourself some baby food!

To further illustrate my point, a 2-pack of Gerber organic baby food consists of two 3.5 ounce packs for $1.60 (could be more, depending on where you shop). I paid $.50 per pie pumpkin, and THIS is what I got for a buck...7 oz for $1.60 vs. (approx) 64 oz for $1.00!!

Freeze puree in ice cube trays and transfer to freezer bags for storage. Done!

Give it a try! I think you're going to be pretty happy with the results, but you have to hurry because pumpkins are almost done for the year. And tell your baby I said, "You're welcome!!"
